Guanaviere M. Wheeler, 92, of Carlinville passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, at Heritage Manor.

She was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Hettick, the daughter of Gilbert O. and Adelia Marie (Brown) Wheeler.

Ms. Wheeler held a bachelor’s degree in business and master’s degrees in religious education and education counseling. She taught high school for many years; she also taught at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she served on the committee that selected the site for the Edwardsville campus. Other places she taught included the University of Illinois in Champaign and the Boyer Bible School (an extension of the Southern Baptist Theology Seminary) in Louisville, Ky. She served as dean of women at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va. She then served as clinical program director at Andrew McFarland Mental Health Center for 10 years. She retired from there to go into private practice as an individual and family counselor; she served as bereavement counselor for Carlinville Area Hospital Hospice. In her later years, she assisted in the preschool at Cherry Hills Baptist Church, where she was a member. She was also a member of Foster Grandparents, Women Bible Study Group and the Drama Team of Cherry Hills Baptist Church.

Ms. Wheeler was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

Cremation was accorded by Lincoln Land Cremation Society. A memorial ceremony was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13, at Cherry Hills Baptist Church in Springfield. Private burial will be held at a later date at Gilead Cemetery, Hettick.
