Roger Kay Ogden

Roger Kay Ogden, 82, of Athens passed away at 6:40 PM on Friday, July 27, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on February 11, 1936 the only child of Maurice and Hazel (Watkins) Ogden. On September 24, 1961 in Petersburg he married Barbara Ruppel who survives.
Roger and Barbara have 3 sons: Steve (Dawn) of Springfield, Michael (Stephanie) of Normal and Brian (Kim) of Athens, 7 grandchildren: Andrew, Zane, Matthew, Mark, Daniel Lauren and Jonathan and 2 great granddaughters: Amber and Jade. He also leaves behind several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a 1954 graduate of Petersburg Harris High School and attended Western Illinois University. He served in the United States Army from 1957-1958 in Ulm Germany. After returning home from the service in 1959 he worked for Country Companies in Petersburg. In January of 1961 he became an independent Insurance Agent in Athens going into business with George Whitney, he later bought George out, starting Ogden Insurance Agency, now in Petersburg. While living in Athens he was elected mayor and also elected Menard County Commissioner for 7 years.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 11 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Petersburg, burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg. A visitation for Roger will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg and also from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the Church, Pastor Jeffrey Gross Officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
