Smith-LaVerne

LaVerne E. Smith nee Stelter, age 86, lifelong resident of Lombard, died January 19 at her home.

LaVerne was the loving wife of the late Roger P. “Codge”; dear mother of Barbara (James) Gorvad of California, Elizabeth (Paul) Sanko of Lombard, Robert P., Jr. of Lombard and Michael John Smith of California; Fond Grandmother of Bob (Maria) Sanko of Lombard and Stuart of Lombard; dear sister of Emily Bonette of California, Audrey (Dr. Anthony) Cooper of California; the late Henry Stelter, Sr., the late Leonard Stelter, the late Virginia Seiler, and the late Marilyn Troyke; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.  She was the darling daughter of the late Henry F. D. and Hattie Stelter of Lombard.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, January 23, from 2-8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Funeral Services are set for Friday, January 24, with LaVerne Lying-in-State from 9:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 215 S. Lincoln Ave., Lombard.  Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oakbrook Terrace.

LaVerne was born at home in Lombard at 349 W. Harrison.  She was Baptized and Confirmed at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church and was a lifetime member there.  She graduated from St. John’s School and was a 1950 Graduate of Glenbard Township High School.  In 1948, LaVerne won the State Baton Twirling Contest.

LaVerne was very active at St. John’s, where she was a Sunday School Teacher, played handbells, was a former choir member and a former member of the Stewardship Board.  She was a 20-year volunteer at Walcamp as an Outdoor Education Leader, a 50-year AAL volunteer and volunteered at ESSE.

LaVerne was also active in the community.  In 1975, LaVerne opened the Lombard Community Senior Center and served for over 40 years as its Director.  She was the 1975 Lombard Woman of the Year.  She also was a Girl Scout leader.

LaVerne enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.  She was a friend to all, including all the Lombard Seniors.
