Mary T. “May” Looby, age 89, of Minooka, formerly of Morrison and Lombard

Mary T. “May” Looby, age 89, a resident of Minooka, IL and a past resident of Morrison, IL and Lombard, IL, went home to the Lord on Friday, June 26th, 2020.  She was born on August 9th, 1930 in Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland to Patrick and Mary (nee – Murphy) Reidy.

May immigrated to the United States in May, 1950 and entered America through Pier 56, New York.  She worked in New York City doing odd jobs, but mainly worked as a waitress.  She met her future husband, William F. Looby, at an Irish dance in New York City while he was on leave from the US Army prior to being shipped off to South Korea where he served as a linesman during the Korean War.  Upon his return and discharge from the Army, they moved to Chicago where they lived in the Logan Square neighborhood and subsequently married at St. Rita’s Church on October 15th, 1955.  They also lived in homes in Villa Park, IL from 1958 until 1960 and Lombard, IL from 1960 until 1998.  May also lived in Morrison, IL from 1998 until 2010 and in Minooka, IL from 2010 until she was called home.  May and William loved to get together with friends and relatives from the old country.  They were members of the West Suburban Irish-American Club and were active in the monthly dances and the yearly summer picnic.  May was rooted in her Catholic faith and beliefs; she is a past member of Sacred Heart Church.

May was a great story teller of her childhood in Ireland, Irish History and of Irish Folklore.  From being lost in a field that she knew like the back of her hand to being chased by a Banshee, from going to local dances to being taught grade school by nuns.

May is survived by her five children, Catherine Looby; Mary (Bruce) Calvert; John (Meri Jo) Looby; William K. (Allison) Looby and Philomena Elias. She also is survived by her nine grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

May is preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Mary Reidy; by her husband, William F. Looby; by her brothers Patrick, and Tadhg; and by her sisters Norrie, Sheila, and Eileen.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 5th, 2020 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard, IL.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 6th, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 114 South Elizabeth Street, Lombard, IL.  Graveside services will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 1S510 Winfield Road, Wheaton, IL.
