Bernice (Schletz) Behnke, age 104, of Lombard

Bernice (Schletz) Behnke’s life was a long life well lived. She was born on February 19th, 1916, to proud parents Elsie and Alvin Schletz. Bernice was an indirect survivor of the Eastland Disaster, because her mother Elsie would have been on that boat but chose not to because she was having morning sickness as being just pregnant with Bernice. Alvin and Elsie were divorced 2 years later, and Bernice was raised by her now single mom and her maternal grandmother Minne Kruse. She lived and grew up in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago and attended Christ Lutheran Church where she met her to be husband in the choir.  They were married May 30th, 1936 and lived in Chicago before moving to Northlake, IL in 1941. They were among the first residents in Northlake and were founding members of Christ Lutheran Church in Northlake.

They had 4 children: Richard (1937 – 1993), Donald (1939-2017), Kenneth (1944-), and Linda (1949-). Bernice was a stay-at-home mom and was active in school activities, the Girl Scout Brownies and served as president of the Ladies Aid Society at church for many years. Bernice never worked and never drove a car.

She is survived by her Son Kenneth, Daughter-in-law Deborah Baumann-Lenz-Behnke, daughter Linda Behnke-Hyman, grand children Kathy Behnke-Poulos-Gorecki, Diane Behnke and Richard Behnke, Daughter-in-law Dori Jaeger-Behnke, Robert Behnke and Karen Behnke, Kimberly-Behnke-Watson, Kristen Behnke-Zait, Kathleen Behnke-Sanderson, Nicole Hyman and Dustin Hyman and many Great and Great-Great Grandchildren.
